This is the index for the handwritten motions of Zacarias Moussaoui in USA v. Zacarias Moussaoui, taken from the Virginia Eastern District Court web site and transcribed by JM. Other transcriptions are in preparation.

JM Transcription Notes:
[nc] stands for "not clear". When it is attached to word or phrase means I attempted to transcribe what I saw for letters or words, but the item was not clear. It should be considered a marker that the word or item its attached to is probably not correctly transcribed but might be for I did make an effort to put what I thought it was.
Other times [word nc] is used in place of a word or item that was impossible to read and then it should be used as a place holder.
In any questions of spelling due to quality of handwriting, space or scanning, ZM received the benefit of the doubt in almost all cases since for the most part his spelling was excellent, much better than mine.
There are several cases where a word was clearly misspelled or misused in person, tense or number, sometimes even being used correctly previously or subsequently. These were reproduced faithfully to ZM's original and not marked or corrected in any way. I think they show an intense emotion and urgency that ZM was writing with. When one is fighting for one's life there are more important things than spelling and grammar.
Punctuation was the most difficult. Only working from the on screen PDF I had 3 main problems with determining punctuation marks. The first was that as scanned lined paper in most instances the lines on the paper as it reproduced were very broken and could give the appearance of a period or a dash or hide a period or lower portion of a two tier mark. Scanning was not perfect as well and any or all of the edges of the original might be cut off on the scan making some letters or potential punctuation impossible to determine.
As a scan of paper, some marks that appear on the scan were not really marks on the paper at all. They are dust, marks on the glass scanning surface or something in the paper that caused a shadow. Also sometimes the marks are from the writing or other markings on the back that have shown through when scanned with a modern ultra sensitive scanner. There appear to be lots of periods in the PDF scans, many of which I reproduce, but many seemed to be scanning related as well and I just left out.
Often punctuation and capitalization are used to express emphasis more than syntax and that is why it was kept just as he wrote it.
I think reading the hand written version of these documents is superior to just reading this transcription of them, and both should be used together.
