Submission for OMB Review; Comment Request

    The Department of Commerce (DOC) has submitted to the Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) for clearance the following proposal for
collection of information under provisions of the Paperwork Reduction
Act (44 U.S.C. Chapter 35).
    Agency: Bureau of Export Administration (BXA).
    Title: Commercial Encryption Items Under the Jurisdiction of DOC.
    Agency Form Number: BXA 748-P.
    OMB Control Number: 0694-0104.
    Type of Request: Extension of a currently approved collection.
    Burden: 650 hours.
    Average Time Per Response: Ranges between 1 and 4 hours depending
on the requirement.
    Number of Respondents: 200.
    Needs and Uses: Encryption items can be used to maintain the
secrecy of information, and thereby may be used by persons to harm
national security, foreign policy and law enforcement interests. For
those items controlled, licenses are required for exports and reexports
of encryption items. The Export Administration Regulations set forth
the licensing policy for exports and reexports of encryption
commodities and software to U.S. subsidiaries, insurance companies,
health and medical end-users, on-line merchants and foreign commercial
firms. The information is used in making licensing decisions.
    Affected Public: Businesses or other for-profit organizations.
