BBC Radio 4 Exposes SAS Training Base in the Not-So-Sleepy English Countryside!
Alan Turnbull, UK Secret Bases, www.secret-bases.co.uk
Listeners to the UK's BBC Radio 4 on the morning of Monday 4th September 2006 were spluttering over their eleven o'clock cup of tea.
A new series of "Lives in a Landscape" - a gentle documentary series in the style of "Down your Way" - kicked off with an episode devoted to a tiny village in the heart of the English countryside. It could almost be the location for Radio 4's old favourite long-running soap "The Archers".
But the show revealed that the resident "disused airfield", dating back to WWII bomber usage and also early radar development, was now home to ex-SAS special forces personnel who provide close protection and defensive driving training to people (including TV news crews) working in the world's war zones. The former SAS staff have turned freelance and formed PMCs - Private Military Companies.
The BBC production team turned to my "Secret Bases" website for assistance and I acted as consultant on the programme. You can read all my original research, listen to the radio show via media player links and view the corporate promo video of the PMC involved, all in a special section within Secret Bases Part 2:-
